If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I love a good race-cation. Give me an excuse to explore somewhere new while taking on a challenge, and I’m there!
Before this trip, I mainly knew Swansea because of IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea. It’s long been on my list of races I’d love to do (I’ve even volunteered there), and as someone who enjoys building a weekend away around an event, Swansea has always appealed. So, when I was invited by Visit Swansea Bay to experience everything the destination has to offer, I couldn’t wait to discover whether it lived up to the hype.
Spoiler alert… it absolutely did.
Whether you’re planning to tackle IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea, another event in the area, like the Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge or you’re simply looking for a UK weekend break packed with incredible scenery, great food and plenty to explore, here’s exactly how I’d spend 48 hours in Swansea Bay.
If you’re thinking about racing in Swansea, save this guide for later-you’ll thank yourself when you’re planning your trip.

Day One: Waterfalls, Woodland Walks & Dinner with a View
Our weekend began at Penllergare Valley Woods, and honestly, I couldn’t have picked a better introduction to Swansea Bay. I’d return in a heartbeat.
This beautiful Victorian estate is home to peaceful woodland trails, tranquil lakes and a stunning waterfall tucked away amongst the trees. It feels miles away from everyday life and is the perfect place to stretch your legs after the drive into Swansea.
As someone who always likes to move before a race, this would be an ideal pre-race walk. Gentle enough not to tire your legs, but scenic enough to help you slow down and soak up your surroundings.
Afterwards, we explored two of Swansea’s beautiful green spaces.

Singleton Botanical Gardens
Singleton Botanical Gardens was such a peaceful place to wander. With colourful borders, tropical glasshouses and beautifully maintained gardens, it’s somewhere you could easily spend an hour or two simply enjoying a slower pace.
If you’re travelling with someone who isn’t racing, this would make a lovely addition to your weekend itinerary while everyone else is obsessing over carb loading!

Staying at Delta Hotels by Marriott Swansea
For the weekend we stayed at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Swansea, perfectly positioned on the waterfront. Literally you couldn’t ask for a better spot.
The location couldn’t have been more convenient. Everything felt within easy reach, from restaurants to the marina, and waking up overlooking Swansea Bay certainly wasn’t a bad way to start the day.
The staff were wonderful, (shout out to Lynne) and they made our pup Winnie very welcome with their Doggy Package. She had a comfy bed, bowls and so many treats from local company Dewkes, waiting for her in our room. Someone definitely got spoilt!

For anyone travelling to Swansea for a race, I’d definitely recommend staying close to the city centre. Having restaurants, cafés and the waterfront all within walking distance makes race weekend far more relaxed.
Dinner at Altitude 28
Dinner was one of my highlights. We hadn’t done any restaurant dates for quite some time, so as both our meeting and wedding anniversaries were so close, we celebrated here.
Altitude 28 sits high above Swansea, offering panoramic views across the bay alongside beautifully presented food. The view is spectacular.
There’s something quite special about sitting with a drink, watching the sun begin to set over the coastline while reflecting on the day. Whether you’re celebrating a finish line or simply kicking off a weekend away, it’s a fantastic place for dinner.

Day Two: Exploring the Gower Peninsula
Saturday was the reason I’d packed my trail shoes.
I took on the Gower Ultra Challenge, following spectacular coastal paths through one of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes. Rather than reliving the race here (I’ve already shared that experience separately!), what really stayed with me was just how breathtaking the Gower Peninsula is.

Towering cliffs. Hidden beaches. Rolling countryside. Endless sea views.
I always try to soak in views on a race, that’s what I do it for. And trust me, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this stretch of coastline.
Even if running isn’t your thing, I’d still recommend heading out onto the Gower Peninsula. There are countless walking routes, beaches to explore and viewpoints that showcase exactly why this corner of Wales is so special.
Refuelling at The Britannia Inn
After spending hours on the trails, dinner at The Britannia Inn was exactly what I needed.
Cosy, welcoming and serving delicious locally sourced food, it was the perfect place to recover after an active day. This is a local hotspot, as the evening rolled on, it only got busier. This is the place to be. There’s something incredibly satisfying about enjoying a hearty meal when you’ve earned it, and this certainly delivered.

Day Three: Mumbles, Marina Views & Welsh History
No visit to Swansea Bay would be complete without exploring Mumbles.
During our visit, the annual Mumbles Raft Race was taking place, creating such a fun atmosphere along the seafront. Crowds lined the promenade, homemade rafts took to the water and there was a real community feel throughout the village.
Even if you don’t visit during an event, Mumbles is somewhere I’d happily return to. Independent shops, cafés, galleries and beautiful coastal views make it easy to lose a few hours wandering around.

Lunch with a View
We finished our weekend with lunch at Secret Beach Bar & Kitchen, overlooking Swansea Bay.
Good food always tastes even better with a sea view, and this was the perfect place to slow down before heading home. Our server Elliot, looked after us. We ate then relocated to have a drink with the beach view on the front. It’s relaxed, welcoming and somewhere I’d happily recommend whether you’re celebrating a race or simply enjoying a weekend away. I’d actually say, post Ironman 70.3 Swansea – this is where you want your food!

Swansea Marina & Museums
Before leaving, we explored Swansea Marina and visited some of the city’s museums.
The National Waterfront Museum offers a fascinating insight into Welsh industry and innovation, while Swansea Museum shares the city’s rich history. If you’re a fan of literature, it’s also worth stopping by the Dylan Thomas Centre.

I always think adding a little culture into a weekend away helps you leave with a better understanding of a destination, and Swansea definitely has more stories to tell than I realised.
Why Swansea Bay Should Be Your Next UK Race-cation
Before visiting, Swansea was simply “that place with the Ironman.”
Now?
It’s somewhere I’d happily return to, race or no race.
What surprised me most was just how varied the area is. One minute you’re wandering through peaceful woodland, the next you’re standing on dramatic coastal cliffs before finishing the day with fantastic local food overlooking the sea.
It’s the kind of destination that works brilliantly whether you’re travelling solo, with friends, your partner or as a supporter for race weekend.
If you’re already signed up for IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea, I’d genuinely recommend adding an extra day or two to your trip. Instead of driving home straight after the finish line, explore everything Swansea Bay has to offer…. you won’t regret it.
And if racing isn’t on your agenda? Swansea Bay still makes an incredible UK weekend escape.

Final Thoughts
Some destinations surprise you, and Swansea Bay was definitely one of them.
I arrived expecting a great base for endurance events. I left already thinking about when I could come back.
Whether you’re planning your next race-cation, looking for a scenic UK staycation or simply fancy discovering more of South Wales, Swansea Bay is well worth adding to your list.
And if you’re eyeing up IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea… consider this your sign to turn race weekend into a proper adventure.
