Nestled in the heart of California, the Tri-Valley region is a haven for those who love to stay active while indulging in exquisite culinary delights. Comprising the charming towns of Pleasanton, Livermore, and Dublin, the Tri-Valley offers an array of activities and dining experiences that cater to every taste and fitness level. Whether you’re an avid cyclist, a foodie, or someone looking to unwind, this guide will highlight the best spots to eat, drink, and stay active in California’s Tri-Valley. We were returning for our third visit and this time we were keen to balance indulgence and activity.
Start Your Day Right: Breakfast and Brunch
Denica’s Real Food Kitchen in Dublin is the perfect place to kickstart your day. Known for its homemade pastries, hearty omelets, and fresh-baked goods, Denica’s offers a cozy atmosphere and a menu that caters to all tastes. Try their signature banana chocolate chip pancakes or the savory chorizo scramble for a delightful morning treat.
For a European twist, Nonni’s Bistro in Pleasanton serves up delicious breakfast and brunch options. The French toast is a crowd fave, and their Eggs Benedict is a must-try. The outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying a sunny morning while savouring your meal.
Midday Munchies: Lunch Spots
When lunchtime rolls around, you have to head to Danville Brewery Co! With a superb selection of food options to choose from, alongside their craft beers and friendly service. The quality and culinary creativity, makes it a must-visit for anyone in search of a delicious and filling lunchtime experience.
Afternoon Delights: Stay Active and Explore
The Tri-Valley isn’t just about great food; it’s also a fantastic place to stay active! Spend your afternoon cycling along the Iron Horse Regional Trail, a scenic route that stretches over 32 miles, connecting Pleasanton to Concord. This trail offers beautiful views and a smooth ride, making it ideal for both casual cyclists and serious bikers. Although do watch out for the ground squirrels as they have a tendency to dart about!
If you prefer water activities like me, Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area in Pleasanton is perfect for swimming. The park’s serene lake is a refreshing spot to cool off and enjoy some time in nature. Also, if you fancy enjoying a triathlon brick session, you can swim then take a nice run on some of the designated running paths close by.
Evening Indulgence: Dinner and Drinks
For a unique dining adventure, Posada is a must-visit for their dinner offerings. Alongside their exceptionally good service, their evening menu features an array of Southwestern-inspired dishes. These are items such as flavourful chile relleno and the tender braised short ribs, perfect for a hearty meal after a day of activities.
When dinner rolls around, head to Uncle Yu’s in Livermore for an upscale Chinese dining experience. Renowned for its elegant ambiance and flavourful dishes, Uncle Yu’s offers a variety of options from spicy Szechuan chicken to savory Peking duck. Their extensive wine list features local Livermore Valley wines that perfectly complement the meal. I can confirm – this was my best Chinese dining experience to date!
Just wanting good music and good wine? Almost Famous Wine Company in the Tri-Valley is your go-to treat for live music. The intimate venue creates the perfect spot for enjoying performances in a close and personal setting. Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or a music lover, Almost Famous Wine Company offers a delightful blend of both, making it a must-visit destination in the Tri-Valley.
Nightcap and Sweet Treats
Cap off your night with a visit to DustBowl Brewing Company in Livermore. This was a big favourite of Nick and mine, as it was only a stones throw away from our hotel. Known for its craft beers (Try Peace, Love and Haze), and lively atmosphere, DustBowl is the perfect place to unwind with friends. Try their Taco Truck Lager or the Hops of Wrath IPA – each brew is crafted to perfection… plus be sure to catch their live music and have a game of an American classic, cornhole!
No visit to the Tri-Valley would be complete without a stop at Lottie’s Creamery in Pleasanton. This artisanal ice cream shop offers a variety of homemade flavours that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. From classic vanilla bean to unique creations like lavender lemon, Lottie’s is the perfect end to a delightful day.
A Convenient Stay: Pleasanton and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
I have stayed in the Tri-Valley a few times now but the last trip was a stop in Pleasanton before and after participating in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The town’s proximity to San Francisco – is just a 45-minute drive. This makes it an ideal base for pre-race preparations and post-race relaxation. Pleasanton’s safe and scenic environment allowed me to train effectively while enjoying the area’s many attractions. After the triathlon it was wonderful to return to the Tri-Valley to unwind and celebrate my achievements.
Conclusion
California’s Tri-Valley region is a gem that beautifully blends active adventures with culinary excellence. Whether you’re cycling the Iron Horse Trail, savoring a meal at Uncle Yu’s, or enjoying a refreshing swim at Shadow Cliffs, the Tri-Valley offers something for everyone. Plan your visit to experience the best of this vibrant and inviting region – you won’t be disappointed!
